This fun and education workshop with Alex is suitable for students who have never used an overlocker for finishing or constructing garments or are not very confident in using one. Overlockers can be objects that evoke fear even in experienced sewing machine users. Often people have them in their sewing rooms, but are afraid to use them because they are worried about threading, worried about needing to change the thread colour or having tension problems. This course is designed to not only familiarise you with an overlocker, but also show how quick and easy it is to construct various garments using one.
In the morning, students will be introduced to overlockers, how they work and their particular features and components. We will work through the principles of threading and how to achieve the correct tension in various situations. You will learn an easy trick that will help you change threads without any hassle. Then we will go into actual sewing: 3 thread overlocking, 4 thread overlocking and the roll hem. You will also get the opportunity to practice all the newly acquired skills.
During our break for lunch students can view a range of different makes and models and anyone considering buying one can get advice on selecting the right overlocker for them and attendees also receive a voucher for £20 towards the purchase on the day of any overlocker we supply. In the afternoon students will learn more about constructing garments with the overlocker. We will make an easy infinity scarf out of jersey which will include all skills we have learned before and also teach you how to sew in the round and finish your garment.
The main objective of this course is never to fear an overlocker again, and help you bring a new friend into your sewing room, the overlocker!
